چکیده

Emerging Infectious Diseases • www.cdc.gov/eid • Vol. 19, No. 7, July 2013 1173 positive by ELISA (Enzygnost AntiTBE/FSME Virus [IgG, IgM] Siemens, Erlangen, Germany) or PCR (online Technical Appendix). Since the 1980s, Sweden has experienced a 4-fold increase in human TBE incidence, with spread southwest (10). The emergence of the TBEV strain T2 closely related to isolates from Sweden may be a continuation of this geographic trend. A previous antibody study found 3 deer positive for TBEV in Zealand-Falster (2); however, without convincing neutralization data, this finding is not confirmed. The lack of TBEV viremia and seropositivity among the patients in Zealand who had histories of tick bites supports a recent introduction to the new focus. Thus, 2 distinct introductions of TBEV have occurred in Denmark. The underlining environmental or climatic factors driving this geographic trend remain unknown.

Usutu virus: potential risk of human disease in Europe.

Usutu virus (USUV) is an African mosquito-borne flavivirus, member of the Japanese encephalitis antigenic group. This avian virus is transmitted by arthropod vectors (mainly mosquitoes of the Culex pipiens complex). It is well known that free-living birds, including migratory species, have the potential to disperse certain pathogenic microorganisms. Usutu virus has recently been introduced to E...

Putative Lineage of Novel African Usutu Virus, Central Europe

[Sarah Gregory] The authors characterize the complete genome of the putative novel Usutu virus strain Usutu-BONN detected in a dead black bird from Germany. Genomic analysis revealed several unique amino acid substitutions among the polyprotein gene. Phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that Usutu bond constitutes a putative novel African Usutu virus lineage, which was probably, recently, introdu...

West Nile virus-neutralizing antibodies in wild birds from southern Spain.

West Nile virus (WNV) is an emerging vector-borne arbovirus with a zoonotic life-cycle whose main reservoir hosts are birds. In humans and horses, WNV infections rarely result in clinical disease but on occasions - depending on factors such as climatic conditions, insect communities and background immunity levels in local populations - they can lead to outbreaks that threaten public and animal ...

The Dutch national nature reserve “De Oostvaardersplassen” is considered a potential high-risk area for arbovirus circulation in the Netherlands: over 6000 hectares of wetland accommodating a diverse and abundant mosquito population, and a wide variety of wildlife. This wildlife includes migratory birds arriving from arbovirus endemic areas in Africa and Central Europe. Here we have continued a...

Relation between Migratory Activity and Energetic Condition among Thrushes (turdinae) following Passage across the Gulf of Mexico’

Whereas endogenous time programs are thought to control different aspects of bird migration, regulation of migratory behavior is sensitive to acute ecological factors. The relation between migratory activity and energetic status was studied by monitoring day (presumptive feeding) and night (migratory) locomotor activity of captive North American thrushes (Hylocichla mustelina, Catharus fuscesce...
